PENALTY OF CRIME

GAOL AND PROBATION PRISONERS SENTENCED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Prisoners were sentenced to-day by Mr. Justice Reed as follows: James Leonard Weeks, aged 2G years, a plasterer, for breaking and entering with intent, was placed on probation for two years.

Tihu Ruatahi. aged 29, a labourer, for breaking an entering and theft on eight charges and theft, was sentenced to gaol for two years with hard labour, to be served after the sentence he is at present undergoing. Urikore Poi, aged 18, a labourer, for breaking an entering and theft, was committed to a Borstal institution for two years.

Michael Dominic O'Rourke, aged 25, taxi-driver, for unlawful carnal knowledge, was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon with two years. Lionel Hart Warren, aged 52, labourer, for incest, was sentenced to goal for three years with hard labour.

Victor John Peddle, aged 29, shop assistant and labourer, for theft and forgery, was sent to gaol for 12 months with hard labour.

James Noel Shore, aged 17, farm hand, for breaking and entering and theft, was placed on probation for two years.

Douglas' Norton, aged 19, labourer 'and machinist, for theft on four charges, was committed to a Borstal for two years.

Roy James Whelan, aged 27, steward and waiter, for breaking and entering and theft, was placed on probation for two years.

WARNING FROM BENCH SERIOUS CHARGES MADE YOUNG MEN INVOLVED (Par Press Association.) BLENHEIM, this day. Probation for two years was granted by the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, this morning to Lewis John William Tuckerman, aged 2G years, who was guilty of unlawful carnal knowledge.

Arnold Clinton Hudson, aged 24, who pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge, was sentenced to gaol for nine months, the Chief Justice stating that this case was more serious than that in which Tuckerman was involved. He emphasised that young men must learn that they could not seduce young girls with impunity.

Henry William Smith, hotel employee, was found guilty of assault on Charles Herbert Brogden at Picton on June G, and Leslie Wilson was found guilty of assaulting Brogen so as to cause actual bodily harm. These prisoners were remanded until tomorrow for sentence.
