RACE CROWD IN FURY
VERDICT FOR OUTSIDER TOTE HOUSE WRECKED HEDGES SET ON FIRE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. .July 15, 1.30 p.m.) MARSEILLES, July 14. The racecourse at Pont de Vivaux was wrecked by punters who were enraged over the judge’s decision in a race. The starting barrier rose faultily, enabling an outsider to romp home. When the name was posted the crowd became infuriated. They fired hedges and slashed benches and demolished the totalisator house. They spared only the concrete grandstand.
It will be many weeks before the course can be used again. Several police and demonstrators were injured.
