WAIROA COUNTY COUNCIL

HEW ENGINEER APPOINTED MR. HAWTHORN SUCCESSFUL RETIREMENT OF MR. SMITH (Herald Correspondent.) The Wairoa County Council met in Wairoa yesterday morning, those present being Crs. A. G.' Nolan, chairman, \V. J. Hill; A. T. Carroll, J. Tait D. V. Thomas and-W. Tait. The Public Works Department forwarded ‘authority for £SO, £1 foi £L for metalling on Waihi road—The engineer was instructed to proceed with the work. ' The assistant engineer of the Public Works Department wrote regretting that the department was unable to accede to the council's request to repair fences around the Aniwaniwa stock paddock. —Cr. Thomas thought that if the Government would not do this work the county should. The chairman said that the area certainly was in the county, but there should be some contributory parties also such as the Stock Auctioneers' Association. It was decided that the engineer should have the work carried out. The stores manager of the Public Work's Department. Wellington, advised that the purchase price to be paid by the Department for the Council’s tractor and planer had been increased from £320 to £385. The receiver of land revenue, Gisborne, forwarded a schedule of thirds and fourths amounting to £SO, accrued to May 31. and requested that proposals' for expenditure be submitted. The Director-General of Hedlth, Dr. M. H. Watt, advised that the matter of having the drainage and plumbing regulations made applicable to the County of Wairoa would receive early attention. The Matamata County Council asked support to a remit .being forwarded for consideration at the next counties' conference favouring a more equitable distribution of motor taxation revenue. —It was decided to accord support. The Hawke's Bay Employers Association wrote requesting the council to join the association.—This was agreed

to. Mr T. le C. Powdrell, forwarded an account for £ll 18s j?d for the cost of vesting a closed road area through his property at Turiroa.—This was passed. , ... w The Carnival Committee submitted a satisfactory balance sheet, the chairman remarking that this was not

a very..usual occurrence. The Wairoa Borough Council asked if the council was in favour of paying hall' the cost of improvement to the street on the . south side of Queen street, fronting the council property, estimated at £ll—This was agreed to. Morere Camp Site Mr, L. J. Schmitt, of the Industries and Commerce Department, inquired the council’s intentions in regard to the camoing site at Morere.—On the motion of Cr. Carroll, it was decided to reply that the council had little money to spend on such improvements and suggesting that the area should be taken over by the department. A'vote of thanks was passed to Cr. W J. Hill for his services on the Hospital Board for a period of years, and Mr. R. H. Glendining, Waihua, was appointed in his stead. The chairman and the councillors present approved of the sale of the old hospital site to the Wairoa Golf Club for £ISOO, this being considered a very good deal. The chairman stated that as the fund for the health camps had been so well supported, there might be sufficient to establish a camp on the East Coast and as tne council had 50 acres"at Opoutama, they should offer 10 acres suitable for a camping site. On the motion of Cr. Carroll, seconded by Cr. Thomas, it was decided to make the offer, if the Government would see its way to establish a camp at Opoutama. The Wairoa Harbour Board wrote urging the planting of more marram grass on the Opoutama sandhills, and suggested the construction of a road to the Mahia and the camps on the top ot the sandhills at -Opoutarfia in-stead-of “the back road.”—The requests were agreed to. A request by Mr. James Tait regarding fencing unused roads was field over, the council having no power to lease a road. Mr. D. A. Hughes asked for an allowance, over and above lees to deal with trespassing stock in the Nuhaka area—The sum of £1 per week was agreed to. Cr. Thomas asked that steps should be taken to deal with dogs worrying sheep, and it was decided to instruct the dog-tax collector to take renewed steps te register dogs, to shoot all not registered, and to more closely define the classes. . A special committee’s report on the , rending programme was read and will come up at the August meeting. . Mr. R. W. Hawthorn, the acting , engineer, was appointed to the position vacated by Mr. A. G. Smith, retired. It was decided to advertise for an assistant engineer at £250 per annum. The chairman said this v/as the last dqy of service fon leave) of Mr. A. G. Smith, who had served the council as engineer for 27 years, and he moved that a letter be sent to him expressing the council's high appreciation of his faithful service and hoping he might have many more years in good health to enjoy his wellearned rest. On the motion of Cr. I Hill, the chairman was asked to select | a suitable article as a tribute from fhe county. The -traffic inspector, Mr. R. W. J Hawthorne, reported having issued during the month 100 driving licenses, making the total 920, and 14 heavy traffic licenses.
