MAHIA HUNT CLUB'S MEET

DOUBLE TO TAPUAE

UNPLEASANT CONDITIONS

Rain made the conditions unpleasant yesterday for the annual point-to-point race meeting of the Mahia Hunt Club, which was held on the old racecourse at Marumaru, the property of Mr. M. Thomas. There were several rain squalls during the da.v and the course was slow on account of its waterlogged state in certain sections. There was an attendance of about 200 people from the surrounding districts. The meeting would have been postponed ha'd the officials not felt obliged to carry on in view of the lateness of the season. The following were the officials: —Master, Mr. A. J. Devery; Judge, Mr. W. F. Wellwood; starter, Mr. H. deLautour; clerk of course, Mr. T. Gedyc: clerk of scales, Mr. R. Smyth: judge of'jumping events, Mr. L. G. Woodward: timekeeper, Mr. J. Prebble; secretary, Mr. A. H. IT. Unwin.

The distances for the races was two miles, except in the Hunters’ Trial, which was over the 21-mile course. There were five falls in the Heavyweight Steeples and the third-placed horse was remounted twice before securing that place on the judge's card. The Hunters’ Trial course included some hill work with hard going and difficult hurdles. Heavy rain added to the trials of the course. At the conclusion of the meeting the owners of the property raced over Messrs Delaney, Shaw, and Thomas were thanked for the use of their laiW by the president of the club, Mr. K. Stewart. The presentation of trophies was-carried out by Mrs. Stewart and each of the recipients was warmly applauded. On behalf of his company, the resident manager for Hawke's Bay of the Dominion Life Assurance Office Mr. W. J. Osborne-White, presented e handsome challenge cup to Mr. E. J. B. Murphy for his win in the Hunters’ Trial and remarked that the course, with its 23 fences, was the most difficult he had seen. Results were as follows:

Maiden Jump (14 entries). —E. W. Richardson’s Tapuae (rider, K. Evans) 1; Mrs. D. Craig’s Sergeant Murphy (J. Agnew), 2; Miss D. Delaney’s Wahine (K. Evans), 3. The horses of R. Bates, E. J. B. Murphy, J. Agnew. E. W. Richardson, Miss D. Jamieson, S Stone, N. O’Malley, D. G. Wilson. R. Brownlie, C. Morton, and Miss J. Short also competed. Light-weight Steeples (10 starters). —Miss D. Jamieson’s Monty 'J. Agnew), 1; E. Te Ngaio's Moetu (Te Kauria), 2: E. D. McNichol’s Frosty Morn (J. Harvey), 3. The horses of Miss V. deLautour, Mrs. D. Craig, Anderson, S. Stone, C. Morton, J. Macrae, and K. Wilson also ran, Won by 10 lengths, and 20 lengths, the placed runners being the only ones to complete the course. Time, 4.40. Ladies’ Open Jump <8 entries).—
