KAHUTIA BOWLERS

THE YEAR’S WINNERS PRESENTATION FUNCTIONFORMER TITLE-HOLDERS Trophies and tributes were the order of the evening at the Kahutia Bowling Club’s pavilion last night, when the annual smoke concert and presentation of club prizes was held, with a large attendance of members and their friends, and an unusually strong manifestation of that fellowship which is to most bowlers the finest feature of the sport. The Carroll memorial pavilion was well filled for the occasion, and Mr. W. Jackson, president of the club, expressed much pleasure regarding the interest shown by all members in the function. A tribute to the life members of the Kahutia club was paid by Mr. Ben Dudlield, who referred to the early work of several bowlers who had been honoured with life membership, and who by their personal contributions had helped to establish the club in its present position. The proposer o' tlie toast mentioned that among the group he referred to were two bowlers, Messrs. J. J. Martin and A Sawyer, who had had the unique distinction of winning the New Zealand pairs championship, and thereby reflected much credit upon the Kahutia club. Both were still active members of the club, and their bowling form in these days was still keen enough to make them formidable opponents. “No Finer Sportsman”

Responding to the toast, Mr. Martin deprecated the compliments addressed to him, but warmly endorsed that tendered to Mr. Sawyer and other veterans of Kahutia. No finer sportsman than Mr. Sawyer had ever played for any club, he said, and the standard of sportsmanship and club spirit had been reflected throughout the whole membership of the club during the whole of its existence.

The presentation of the season’s trophies was carried out by the president, who warmly congratulated the winners on their successes. _ The season had not been a particularly successful one in the field of interclub competition, he added, but it was a good tiling for any sport to see the major trophies changing hands from time to time.

The list of Kahutia winners of club events was as under: —

Stoneham. who paid a warm compliment to Mr. Power, skip of the Dan Barry Fours rink, and long a powerful contributor to the successes of the Kahutia club in centre competitions. Following the drinking of the toast, Mr. Stoneham was himself honoured with cheers, Mr. Martin describing him as one of the best sportsmen in the district. Other toasts honoured the evening included the following: “Gis-borne-East Coast Bowling Centre,” proposed by Mr. R. Morse and responded to by Mr. S. McKenzie. “Visiting Bowlers," proposed by Mr. J.
