PURCHASED BY STATE
CHRISTCHURCH PROPERTY OFFICE ACCOMMODATION (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. Several Government departments will ultimately be housed in the building formerly occupied by Skelton, Frostick and Coifipany in Hereford street which has been purchased by the Government. The immediate intention is to use this large three-storey building as central offices for all branches of the Labour Department which are now scattered about the city. When details of the purchase have been completed and arrangements are made about the existing tenants of the building, the three branches of the Labour Department—labour, jMacement and employment—will be shifted there so that their activities can be co-ordinated in one set of offices. The building which lias been acquired will be extensively altered inside by the construction of additional walls to provide for the various offices.
The price paid for the building was £24,000. The sale was negotiated between the Government and the Bank of New Zealand as liquidator for Skelton, Frostick and Company.
