Round the Tracks

—w<By “Cynic.”)-

Track work at the Park was of a varied and useful character yesterday morning, there being a good attendance to see the work. Symcony (Woods) was the first out, going two strong rounds at half-pace. Hunting Star (Goscomb) was given work of much the same order, doing it well. Rana (Dornan) was going better than Quilp (Dunn) over three furlongs in 39sec. Defray, Ua-Ia and Dragon Queen were all given light mixed tasks. Hunting Cry (Dunn) finished up at his best over the last few furlongs of two rounds at half-pace. Ihu (Lee) went two rounds at a strong half-pace, going evenly throughout. Gay Blonde (Lee) and De Friend (Tinsley) were companions over four furlongs in 50 2-ssec., Gay Blonde going best in the early part. Quaint (Kerr) ran the last four furlongs of a round in 51 2-ssec. Good, Sport (Dunn) and Pirima (Lee) were companions over a round, finishing up at their best over the last portion. Gay Hunter (Kellett) was going better than Mailman at all stages of a five furlong gallop in lrnin. 6sec. Skyway (Kerr) went six furlongs at three-quarter pace. Vulpes (Dornan) was always going better than Mahala (Lorigan) over seven furlongs in lrnin. 33sec. Brown Lap (R. Russell) went two rounds at a slow half-pace on the course proper'. 'Hunting Crop (Dunn) ran home from the three furlong post in 38 4-5 sec. Good Hunting (Tinsley) and Small Boy (Lee) went a mile at three-quar-ter pace. Kitchenette (Lorigan) and Ruinette (Kerr) ran three furlongs in 37 2-5 sec., a fair gallop. Rapa Waiata (Dunn) and Warstep's colt (Kerr) went a round together at strong half-pace. Luminant’s filly and Joyala were both set light mixed tasks. Puccini (Rangi) jumped five steeplechase fences in a finished style. The brown gelding is a bit on the light side. Mangatai (Dunn) jumped the same fences and showed an improvement on his last effort. Botlnvell (Lee) and Big Dook (Kellett) were companions over a mile at three-quarter pace. Paul Robeson (Dornan) went.seven furlongs in lrnin. 34sec\, doing it well within himself. Legatee (Woods) ran three furlongs in 37* 4-sscc., this being his first gallop since racing at Trentham. Hunting Mars (Lee) went a round at strong half-pace on the plough. Blue Needle (White) went two strong rounds on the hurdle track. Lordly Knight (Dornan) went a round on the plough at three-quarter oace, going well throughout. Shani was not worked, this also applying to Pokiha’s filly. Pennycomequick (Nixon) was set a light task. Flying Comedy (Kellett) went a round at a strong half pace, being anxious to increase the pace. Kahunoke (Davis) was given a light mixed task, Black Thread (Dornan) also doing work of a light character. The action of the Auckland country clubs in importing Day Comet and Archiestown might be copied by the clubs in this district. It might be possible to secure a horse like Colossus, who has sired some very useful racehorses and Show horses. As the season is right on us, it may be that .he matter has been left too late for the present, but the suggestion is well worthy of serious consideration. ***<«. The heartiest congratulations arc expressed to Mr. Norman Loisel over the success of John Charles at Trentham. It is probably <due to Mr. Loisel’s staunch support of the races at Toiaga Bay that John Charles had a chance to make racing history. To win races of such class is a fitting reward for his sportsmanship.

H.B. HUNT MEETING

PREPARING FOR SATURDAY SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS The tracks were in excellent order for yesterday’s gallops at Hastings, and on Saturday next, the day of tfu annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Hunt, the racing track should be perfect. Where not specified the following gallops took place on the inside grass.

On the plough Bunfight (R. Marsh) made easy the task of galloping lour furlongs in 50sec., pointing to the ex-Chokc-borc-trained mare being back tc. something like her best form. She will start in the Tikokino sprint at the week-end.

Cletrac (P. Atkins), a greatly- improved gelding, moved very freely and finished full of running in a gallop of a working nature over a mile. Top Hat (Zuppercich) and Agog (C Shields) were associated in a schooling essay over half-a-dozen fences For beginners they shaped very well, making no mistakes. The former is over seventeen hands.

Cotsfield, who has fully recovered from the few scars obtained at the Dannevirke meeting, was out doing solid three-quarter pace work. With firm going next Saturday the big gelding will be a force to be reckoned with. Marsyas, his stable companion, did light work. He looks none the worse for his Trenthain races.

On the plough Journet (A. Griffiths) and Mercian Prince (R. Marsh) were restricted to a working gallop over one round, which occupied 1.46 J. On the same track Shu (Atkins) and Blygain (Marsh) were together all the way over five furlongs in G3jjsec., both doing it well. Seattle (J. Walsh), who was not anxious to go out and do her task, eventually went off at a bound to finally run half a mile in 54sec. but was by no means extended. Mon Ace (H. Murray) and Marching On (Marsh) got the best of the start over Slippery (11. Young) by a couple of lengths, and at the end of half a mile the former pair were about half a length in front of Slippery in 52 sec.

Thala and Jacynth were sprinted down the straight, and could not be timed. The former will contest the Okawa Maiden race on Saturday next. On the plough Tres Sec (Atkins) and Trailer (Marsh) were responsible for a very fair effort when registering 1.17 A for three-quarters of a mile, with little to choose between the pair at the finish, but if anything Tres Sec went slightly the better. Contact (J. Forsyth) had the measure of Hamarin (H. Callinan) over six furlongs in the moderate time of 1.22, but this track was not as fast as the plough. Hamarin went disappointingly.

Okawa was slightly ahead of Buster Brown (Atkins) after galloping five furlongs on the plough in a fraction
