TRADE WITH BRITAIN

NEED FOR RECIPROCITY N.Z. POLICY CRITICISED (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. A meeting of the council of the United Kingdom Manufacturers’ and New Zealand Representatives Association, was held in Wellington recently, when many matters relating to trade between the United Kingdom and New Zealand were discussed. In regard to the recently-concluded meat agreement between the United Kingdom and New Zaland, under which a substantial increase in Britain’s allocation of the Dominion’s meat and lamb was provided for, it was felt that this was another forcible example of the liberal treatment accorded to New Zealand. It further emphasised Britain’s willingness to help New Zealand’s desire for an expanding export trade, and that the United Kingdom was the one safe market for New Zealand’s primary produce, on the sale of which New Zealand depended so much lor her economic existence.

While no details had been received of any concessions given by New Zealand, the council took the view that having regard to such generous treatment, and that New Zealand's products were allowed free and unrestricted entry to the Home market, the people of New Zealand would realise the necessity of reciprocity by buying United Kingdom manufactured goods and by seeing that they were allowed on this market with as few restrictions as possible, thus enabling the United Kingdom to buy our primary produce and acknowledging in a tangible way, their recognition of the fact that the’ United Kingdom welcomes New Zealand’s produce free of duty and in increasing quantities.
