AUCKLAND PROVISION SUBSIDY OF £4 WEEKLY PERIOD OF FOUR MONTHS (Per Proas Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. "As a result of my conferences with local bodies, I am delighted to state that provision has been made for the - employment of 1800 married men for a period of four months,” said the acting-Minister, of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, in discussing the proposals put before him by local authorities for absorbing unemployed men in their districts with the assistance of the subsidy offered by the Government. “This is the full allotment for the metropolitan district of Auckland,’ he added. “Judging by the general response made to our offer by local bodies throughout New Zealand, I am confident that the 7000 men we reckoned On employing for four months on full time will soon be engaged,” he added. Mr. Webb said the Government subsidy would be equivalent to £4 a week for four months, and that any additional wages would be paid by the employing bodies. The Government will distribute an additional £BO,OOO for a year over the ordinary relief payments in the Auckland metropolitan area* as a result of an agreement reached with the local bodies. The Minister continued: “This, I am confident, will reflect itself in business generally and may rightly be expected to provide further employment i'or those now unemployed. The work

will begin immediately as soon as arrangements can be made for the local bodies to employ the men. We are anxious to have as many as possible employee! during the .winter when much seasonal work is at a standstill.’'
