NEW TAXI LICENSE

APPLICATION HELD OVER BOROUGH COUNCIL ACTION An application for an additional taxi car license in Gisborne was deferred by the Borough Council last night until the intentions of the Minister of Transport in the control of taxis is made known. In reaching this decision, the council accepted the recommendation of the works committee, which reported as follows: — “Representatives of the Crest Taxi Company, applicants for an additional license, and representatives of the remaining taxi proprietors who objected to the issue of an additional taxi license waited on the committee and discussed at length the application of the Crest Taxi Company. “In view of the Minister of Transport's intention to place taxi proprietors under the provisions of the Transport Licensing Act, the committee considers it would be unwise at this juncture to recommend the issue of an additional license; the Minister may consider the number of existing licenses (17) to be sufficient.

"It is, therefore, recommended that the application be held over until tire Minister's decision is made known, and the committee suggests that in the meantime the taxi proprietors meet and endeavour to institute a co-operative system on similar lines to that agreed upon by Wellington proprietors.”
