INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

ONLY PORTION OF SITE MORE L AND AVATLABLE ‘SHOULD BE PURCHASED”

Tiie authority of the Education Department for the purchase of only 10 acres of a much larger block of land as the site for the proposed intermediate school for Gisborne was lengthily discussed at the meeting last evening’ of the Poverty Bay Primary Schools’ Association. It was decided to write to the Alinistcr of Education, the lion. P. Fraser, expressing disappointment at his action and urging the department to purchase the entire block while it was available. The area of land decided upon was the only section situated in a central position that would be suitable for the requirements of the school, and it was pointed out that the natural expansion of the school must necessitate the purchase of a further area at a later date at an increased price. Observation of the actions of the department in the purchase of lands for education in Poverty Bay and Hawke's Bay in the past bore out that contention, it was stated. Question of Consolidation

I( was decided to ask all schools in the country districts, which were affected or likely to be affected, to give consideration to the question of consolidation with the idea of forwarding a request to the department to expedite the matter. It was further decided that a discussion on the provision of facilities for country children to attend the intermediate school would take place at the next meeting of the association.

The question of the provision ' of pedestrian crossings at or near schools was discussed and particular reference was made to Childers road in the vicinity of the Convent, and Gladstone road near Te Hapara School. The secretary was instructed to write to the Gisborne Borough Council in connection with those points of danger. Assisting All Schools Emphasis was laid on the fact that the aim of the association was to assist all schools and it was not purely a town school organisation. There had been an impression prevalent among some of the country schools that that was the case, but the chairman. Mr. D. ,1. Duncan, explained that the association covered the northern ward, which extended from the Mohaka River, in the south, to East Cape. All school committees should join up with the association and lend their assistance. The second Thursday in every month was decided upon as’ the day’ for the committee meetings. Those present were Messrs. Duncan. chairman. A. F. Langridgc, E. File, F. Nelson, W. Trane, Dcvery, and the hot 1 ., secretary, Mr. D. At. Gracie. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. J. D. Alartin, Sewell, and Ilowie. The chairman welcomed the representative of the Muriwai School, Mr. Devcry, to his first meeting.
