UAWA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING GENERAL RATES STRUCK (Herald Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Uawa County Council was held in Tolaga Bay on Saturday, those present being Crs. J. AlcNeil, chairman, D. H. Hawkins, A. 11. Reeves, H. R. Liltleworth, ,J. L. Reeves, F. W. Shelton and P. T. Weeks. Before proceeding with the business, the chairman and Cr. Hawkins extended a cordial welcome to Cr. A. H. Reeves, who had been elected to represent the Tauwhareparae riding, vice Ah'. E. C. Boise], resigned. Cr. A. 11. Reeves suitably responded.

The Public Works Department, Gisborne, wrote stating that a deputation had waited upon the Minister of Public Works with regard to restoring the Waimata to Arnkihi road and asking whether the council was prepared to contribute to the cost of restoration and maintenance. —The clerk was instructed to reply that the council was concentrating on giving the settlers a metalled road into Tolaga Bnv, which was their main outlet, and that even if the road in disrepair was restored it would only be used as a stock track, and furthermore the council had been making annual contributions to the Cook County Council towards the maintenance of this boundary road for the past 10 years. The Cook Hospital Board advised that its estimates had been increased due to the introduction of the 40-hour week for the domestic staff and other alterations and a further £sl was required of the council.—The letter was received. Mr. O. E. Bartram wrote advocating the erection of two bridges on Rutledge’s road and advised that he was prepared to contribute towards the cost.—An application is to be made to the Public Works Department for a grant of £501) on account. The Union Bank of Australia, Limited, advised that an overdraft limit of £12,000 had been agreed to. Riding Rates

On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Cr. Hawkins, the followling general rates were struck in the various ridings:—

Arakihi. s>,d in the £. Ilauiti, :Ud in the £. Mangaheia, 4>d in the £. Mangatuna, 4d in the £, Tauwhareparae, 4UI in the £. Tolaga, 7d in the £. These rates are to be payable on July 31. The clerk presented a list of rentals paid by council tenants and it was decided that no action should be taken with regard to making increases.

The engineer was instructed to have the drains from Mr. J. R. Lincoln’s shop to the river cleaned out, and also that attention be given to the road surface of Banks street, near Parkinson street, and also that the corner of Solnnder and Parkinson streets be attended to.

It was resolved that a man should be engaged to clear drains on Mil--1'"'" ' " 1 and the nuttier was left to Cr. Weeks to deal with.

Accounts amounting to £1049 Ids 5d were passed for payment.

At a special meeting also held on Saturday the clerk presented the balance sheet for the year ended March 31, 1937, as returned by the Controller and Auditor-General. The balance sheet was considered settled.
