RABAUL RESCUE WORK
CREW OF FREIGHTER ATI) TO 750 REFUGEES HONOLULU, July 11. Captain Olsen, of the American freighter Golden Bear, revealed on the arrival of the vessel to-day that the ship had lost its radio operator, but by heroic measures the crew had rescued 750 persons from disaster when the two volcanic eruptions destroyed the town of Rabaul, capital of New Guinea, on May 29. The rescue work entailed risking the envelopment of the ship and all hands in lava. Captain Olsen said the men went ashore and led refugees, mostly women and children, from the doomed town.
