DEFENCE OF EMPIRE

AID BY DOMINIONS VIEWS OF MR. SAVAGE BALBAO, July 11. The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr. M. J. Savage, who is returning from the Imperial Conference, in an interview, said there would be no wars if the able-bodied men in the world were employed at decent salaries, because the workers would refuse to fight. He added that while he was a fervent advocate of peace, he was convinced that effective defence of the British Empire was necessary, and the Dominions would contribute to the present plans. “There is no question of the sufficiency of world production,” he said. “The difficulty lies in the bad system of distribution. My Government is bending every effort to assure New Zealand workers of a living wage by the exploitation of rich mines, agriculture, and the stock-raising industries.

Mr. Savage paid a visit to the President of the Republic, Dr. Arosemena.
