EXPLORERS’ TOUR

FATHER AND DAUGHTER TRIP THROUGH DOMINION ON FOOT AND PY CANOE Bearing the flag of tlie Explorers’ Club, New York, a traveller who arrived from the United States by the Mariposa, the Hon. Arthur W. North, announced his intention ol' walking through the Urewera Country and tramping through the South Island, as well as travelling by canoe down the Wanganui River. Mr. North, a member of the Royal Geographical Society, is accompanied by his daughter, Miss Mary R. North, and a photographer, Mr. C. C. Bradley. Both Mr. North and his daughter, who recently celebrated her 18th birthday, are experienced travellers, Miss North having accompanied her father on many of the expeditions he has made to out-of-the-way places. She has travelled through Arctic Lapland, the Colorado canyons and Yucatan, and is anxious to visit some of the more remote parts of New Zealand, particularly in the South Island.

Returning from an expedition to the Hudson Bay district seven years ago, Mr. North was commissioned to undertake trips in various parts of the world to gather material for lectures to students in United States colleges and schools. He has since then travelled extensively, on foot for the greater part, the better to study various countries and their people.

Mr. North said he intended to go by train to Rotorua, and commence his “exploration” of New Zealand by walking through the Urewera Country. He would then travel down the Wanganui River by canoe, and finally visit the South Island, hoping to go as far as Mount Cook, “The flag of the Explorers' Club has been in New Zealand once before, with Admiral Byrd,” Mr. North said. “The club was founded at the time Peary was making his struggle to reach the Pole, and has many distinguished members.”

Although she is still a student, Miss North has already written a book, an account of her experiences in Colorado. It is likely that father and daughter will later collaborate in a further- book dealing with their New Zealand tour.
