The New Zealand cricketers experienced a cheerless day in the field, with cold weather and a wicket that was not helpful, in the match .against Yorkshire to-day. The county side, although weakened by the absence of Sutcliffe and Leyland, was reinforced by the University stars, Yardley and Gibbs. The latter and Hutton gave the county a good start of 117 for the first wicket. Rain interrupted play for an hour in the morning and again for half an hour in the atfevnoon. The New Zealand bowling was not as steady as usual, excepting for Cowie. Even Dunning sent down an occasional long hop. Hutton and Mitchell raised the score of 257, Hutton showing an admirable blend of defence and attack, and made hardly a mistake, except at 85, when he appeared to be caught by Tindill oil’ Dunning. After Vivian had proved unsuccessful, Donnelly shouldered the slow bowling and took two wickets with consecutive balls. Yorkshire’s score quickly changed from one lor 257 to four for 273. Catches Through Mis-hits Weir, fielding in the region of square leg, accepted a third catch oil the slow left-hander at 285, Donnelly bowling round the wicket. All the catches came through mis-hit balls which the batsmen tried to force. The New Zealand attack was defied by Turner and Smailes just when another success would have been serious for Yorkshire. A crowd of 7500 demonstrative county folk, with a good knowledge of the game, frequently applauded the fielding, especially Kerr’s excellent catch on long-on. The New Zealand team omitted Roberts, who is suffering from a sore shoulder, Carson, Gallichan, Hadlee, and Lowry. Sutcliffe is suffering from an injured leg and Leyland has fractured a linger and is not playing.
