Tiie outstanding feature was the defeat of Yorkshire by Middlesex, this being one of the games that was interrupted. Sussex were fortunate to defeat Worcester, being dismissed for 92 in the first, and then recovering to win by nine wickets. Their first innings collapse was due to the bowling of Parks, who took seven wickets for 42 runs.

The Notts batsman, Hardstaff, was again in fine form and carried his bat for 214 against Somerset. In Essex’s first innings, O’Connor missed a double century by only eight runs and Taylor and Nichols each contributed centuries towards the big total' of 588 for nine wickets. The batting success was followed by the quick dismissal of Northants in both innings, Smith taking seven for 56 and six for 62.

Batting for Lancashire, Pavnter had another good day, 164. Pollard’s seven wickets for 76 was mainly responsible for the dismissal of Glamorgan, but the Welshmen were able to avoid an innings defeat.

Glamorgan in the first compiled 275 (Pollard seven for 76), and followed on to lose four for 188. Lancashire won on the first innings. Notts in the first ran up 519 for five and declared (Knowles 91, Hardstaff not out 214). Somerset in the first made 195 (Gimblett 67), and followed on to lose six for 166 (Gimblett 94). Notts won on the first innings. Gloucester in the first made 305 (Hammond ,112), and in the second 145. Hampshire’s first produced 221 (Goddard eight for 80), and the second 172 (Goddard six for 66). Gloucester won by 57 runs. Surrey in the first scored 299 (Squires 139). In the second they lost three for 199 (Fishlock 80). Derby’s first yielded 217 (G. Pope 122; Gover five for 70). Surrey won on the first innings.

In the annual schools match, Harrow in the first innings made only 118 (Bannister, six for 32). Eton in the first lost five for 131 (J. Mann 51 not out).
