KOPUAWHARA NEWS

(Herald Correspondent.) The weather during the past week has been atrocious, with almost continuous heavy rain. Work in the cuttings was practically suspended, and several slips occurred. No material damage was done, however. A new library has been installed at No. 3 camp, and some really good modern books are available to subscribers. The new building shortly will be completely finished. The billiard tables are already at. Waikokopu waiting to be installed. The Sunday school and evening praise service was held despite the inclement weather, Padre F. Thompson preaching to a large congregation. Mrs. Stewart presided at the piano. * Mr. D. S. Thorburn, senior storekeeper at No. 3 camp, left this week for Tauranga on his annual leave. — Miss Aileen Stone, Wairoa, is paying a visit to her aunt, Mrs. Bennett, at Paritu.—Mr. Tom Prebble, who is a patient in the Wairoa, Hospital, hopes to be convalescent next week. He has been suffering from pleurisy.—Messrs. P. Hogan and L. Tasker have resigned and departed for Hastings.— Mr. L. Keay, who is in hospital with appendicitis, is reported to be progressing favourably. His place has been taken by Mr. F. Daysh, who has made himself very popular with the residents. —Mr. Hugh Johnstone, chief clerk at the Public Works office, Kopuawhara, has been off duty owing to an attack of influenza. —Mrs. Crabbe, who has been spending a holiday with Mrs, Haworth, Gisborne, has returned to her home at No. 3 camp. The dance at No. 4 camp held by the local branch of the Labour Party was very successful, despite the inclement weather. A good attendance, music, and competitions made for a pleasant evening.
