FLIGHT ROUND WORLD
MRS. PUTNAM’S PROGRESS HOP TO NEW GUINEA DARWIN, June 29. Mrs. Amelia Earhart Putnam, the American who is flying round the world, took off from Darwin about 7 a.m. and reached Lae, New Guinea, about 3 p.m., the flight taking 7 hours 40 minutes, mostly above the clouds. Mrs. Putnam is resuming her flight at dawn to-morrow for Howland Island. Royal Air Force men at the direction finding station at Darwin made sure that the radio equipment of Mrs. Putnam’s plane was in perfect order. She was in communication with Darwin station at frequent intervals after her departure. Mrs. Putnam, clad in open blouse and brown slacks, remarked before climbing into the cockpit: - “I was under the impression the weather would be very warm, but, believe me, I am finding it very cold in the tropics.”
