WATER AT WAINUI

12FT. STREAM DIVINED NEAR HEALTH CAMP SITE The concern of the Gisborne Health Camp Committee in regard to a sufficient supply of water at Wainui Beach, if the gift site for the health camp was accepted, has been placed almost at an end with the location of a 12ft. underground stream by means of a divining rod. The highly satisfactory nature of the site from the health point of view was dealt with recently in a report to the committee by the schools’ medical officer, Dr. E. G. Heycock, and the problem of water for the camp was the only point against the construction of the building at Wainui. It was reported then, however, that the possibility of the presence of an underground stream would be investigated by Mr. J. C. Field, who has had many successes previously in divining water for residents on the beach. When Mr. Field went out to the site yesterday in company with members of the committee he was unable to find water directly under the plot of ground on which the camp would be built, but was successful in locating a stream adjacent to the site on the opposite side of the road. The underground stream was estimated to be 12ft in width and this, too, was cpnsidered satisfactory in view of the fact that the other courses divined on the beach for the residents had channels of about only 4ft. It will be necessary to gain the permission of the owners of the land on the hillside of the road and that matter will be dealt with by the committee making the arrangements. The chairman of the Gisborne committee, Mr. H. Holmes, is at present in Wellington and the report of Mr. Field on the location of the stream has been communicated to him, to be referred to the secretary of the central council.
