POVERTY BAY HOUNDS

MEET AT MANUTUKE SPLENDID DAY'S SPORT. (Herald Correspondent.) The- Oik; weather on .Saturday attracted ,a large number of followers and friends at. the run of the Poverty Bav hounds held at M.annful'e.

Bounds drew through .Mr. Daulton's and into ..Mr. Richard's lucerne paddock but, these proving blank, they crossed the thorn hedge into Mr. It. .Tones, through .Mi's. M. Jones and Mr. \V. Richard's into .Mr. Dnulton's maize paddock, where a hare was raised. Bounds drove her over Fiike, tapu Bill into the swamp at the back, then over into .Mr. Jacques. Here she turned right-handed back into .Mr. Daulton's and down into .Mr. Stead's, where hounds lost her by the creek.

The next hour was spent drawing various coverts in the properties of Mr. Steed and Mr. Daulton to the right of the main road. As the ground was dry, scenting conditions were very difficult and it seemed impossible to raise a hare. Bounds were then brought across the road and a hare seen went away from the bank of the creek only to make a straight line back across the bitumen road, through Mr. Steed's on to the slopes of l'ttketapu. Bounds followed her straight over the top and down to the swamp at. the back, across the fence into Air. Jacques' and on towards his homestead. Here the best hound work of the day was witnessed, hounds holding the hare well. .In the homestead paddock she turned right-handed am; raced straight back to the hill. The line now ran straight up the face, down and on to the flats, where it turned left-handed back to Mr. Daulton's maize, skirting the edge of it and seeking refuge in the rushes at the bottom of the hill. Here hounds faulted and overran the line, but casting back in the rushes chopped the run hare. It had been a good run, providing difficult jumps for some of the followers. Farmers Thanked Bounds were cast again when another hare was lifted that crossed I lie main road and an hour was spent over Mr. Itobcke's and Air. Biggins', finally the line was lost, in the maize, and, the hour being late, hounds were lifted and followers relumed to Mr. Dnulton's hospitable homestead lor afternoon tea.
