EX-SOLDIERS' AFFAIRS

WAIROA R.S.A. REPORT A SUCCESSFUL YEAR (Herald Correspondent.) Improvement in the position of many returned soldiers who have been successful in applications for pensions or for veterans' allowances has been noted in the Wairoa district during the past year, and in the annual report of the Wairoa Returned Soldiers' Association, to be presented to a general meeting this evening, this improvement is commented upon with satisfaction. The financial position of the association itself has improved, thanks to the smaller number of calls upon its finances and the joining-up of men who formerly were not on the membership list. The association, nevertheless, has extended assistance to a number of cases, throughout the year, and the distribution of gifts to "Diggers' " children was repeated with success. Arrears of Subscriptions Ju the matter of subscriptions, the report indicates that the arrears are causing concern to the executive, and it is urged that every member should make himself financial on the books. The president, Major J. O. Scott, comments in the report that the association owes its thanks to the engineers of the Public Works Department for the manner in which the interests of the "diggers" had been studied throughout the year. Financial membership on March 31 last was 116, while 76 others on the books were in arrears with subscriptions. The president asked that a special effort should be made to clear up arrears as early, as possible, if not at once.

The association is to be represented at the annual conference this year, it is hoped, the branch being entitled to one delegate. In recording its thanks to the many Wairoa organisations and individuals from whom support had been received during the year, the association mentioned particularly the Wairoa Borough Council and the Wairoa Municipal Band, in connection with the annual Anzac Dav celebration.
