ROTARY DELEGATION
RETURN FROM THE EAST NO SLUMS JN JAPAN SYDNEY, May 7. Mr. A. C. Darker, oi' Tam worth, leader of the goodwill mission of Rotary to the East, said on his return by the Changte yesterday that the visit had been a great success. “At every big centre in Japan we were met and cordially welcomed bv Rotarians,” •he said. “Although our mission was primarily one of pure friendship, everywhere we went the desire to promote greater trading relationships was expressed. It was mentioned that Japan desired to purchase wool in greater quantities from Australia, and that it was hoped that Australia, would purchase more goods from Japan.” “The authorities in Japan stress the fact that with their growing population, Japan must have room for expansion.” Mr. Darker said. Mr. Darker said that members ol the delegation were impressed by the cleanliness of the people and their homes. These had to he thoroughly cleansed at least once every three months. The fur--1 niture had to he placed outside the home and not taken in until the building was certified by the health authorities as being clean. Mr. Wilfred Johnson, Sydney mountant. who was also a member of the delegation., said that he was amazed at the improvements in Japan since his last visit 11 years ago. The v (iking classes appeared happy and contented, in good health and condition. There was a complete absence of slums. Mr. Johnson said that the Pot ary party had on their way io the East, learnt the Japanese National .anthem. This had been sung at most of the gatherings, and had been enthusiastically received.
