LIGHTNING STRIKES SHIP
COMPASSES USELESS STORM OFF VICTORIA (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Pross Assn.) MELBOURNE, May 28. Struck by lightning during a tierce storm off the Australian coast, the British tramp steamer Appcldore put into Portland, an outport of Victoria, to-day, for repairs. The Appcldore was en route in ballast from England to Sydney. The ship’s compasses were rendered useless. An expert compass adjuster has been sent from Melbourne to Portland.
