VALUE OP FERTILISERS EFFECT ON- PRODUCTION PEOFITABLE INVESTMENT How does the use of fertiliser influence production and costs in dairyms? A certain amount, of authoritative information about this question is available. From data the following, four significant facts have bfl&n calculated (working to the nearest •penny): — (lj When the butterfat production was under 751 b, an acre the expenditure iu fertilisers was 5s 8d an acre and the cost of fertilisers per 1001 b. of butterfat was Os 3ld. (2) When the butterfat production ranged from 1251 b. to 3 501 b. an acre the expenditure on fertiliser was 10sOil an acre and the cost of fertiliser per .1001 b. of butterfat. was 7s lOd. (3) When the butterfat production ranged from 2001 b. to 2251 b. ail aero the expenditure on fertiliser was Ids Sd an acre and the cost of fertiliser per 3001 b. of butterfat was 7s. (4) When the butterfat. production was 2501 b, an aero and over the expenditure on fertiliser was 18s lOd an acre and the cost of fertiliser per 100 lb of butterfat was 0s Sd. These figures for the .1932-34 season, are based on the examination of 550 s North Island farms by the Department, of Agriculture, With the changes that have taken place in the meantime in the prices of fertilisers and the returns from butterfat the position now would be still bettor. The farms were selected so as to be typical of the industry, and this they proved to be, being, however, slightly better# than the average. They were locatod principally as follows: .145 in the Wellington province, 86 in Taranaki, 144 in South Auckland, and 115 in North Auckland.
