SHEEP EXPORT
TO RUSSIA AND JAPAN . DEMAND FOR CORK I EDA EES New Zealand sheepbreeders—of Corriedales in particular—are likely to have a record export this season. The Russian delegation made a fairly exhaustive inspection of the breeds from which it desired to make purchases, but it is understood that no actual business resulted, largely on account of the sheep not conforming in some respects to the standards sot by the Soviet authorities. One condition, for instance, is that the minimum weight of the Romneys should be a certain standard comparable-. with the weight of the British Romney. New Zealand Romneys are not such weighty sheep as the British, for one or two obvious reasons. Size in New Zealand sheep, in any case, is not regarded as more important than quality and wool. It is.understood that a full report has been supplied to the Russian authorities, and the delegation has returned homo. Members or it are expected to return next year armed wit h wider discretion, and they probably will make purchases. Shipment to Korea. In the meantime two Japanese delegations have been operating very freely in Canterbury! Up till a few days ago the delegations, buying for different interests, had secured slight ly more Ilian 1000 head, all Oorrledales. They had still some more to secure before their books were filled. They were confined to an average price for their purchases, but were not afraid to exceed the figure foi any sheep especially attractive, mak ing the cost average on the lower priced sheep. Most of the purchases aro two-tooth owes, which, of course, have been mated, and the remainder ewe hoggets. The sheep are intended for Korea, where the Japanese Government has several breeding stations. It is expected that the first shipment will bo made about June 20. Two more Japanese parties are due to arrive shortly, representing other interests. It was stated recently that the probable number of sheep that would bo secured if the prices were right would npporach 0000.
