UAWA COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING ROADS AND METALLING (Herald Correspondent.) The monthly meeting ot' the Uawa Comity Council in Tolaga Bay on Wednesday was one of the longest for many years, lasting Until. 4.15 p.m. Those present were Crs. J. McNeil, chairman, E. C. Loisel, H. 1!. Littleworth, E. W. Shelton, and P. T. Weeks. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. D. H. Hawkins and J. L. Reeves.

The No. 4 District Highways Council advised that an application was being made to the Minister of Transport to declare one mile through the Tolaga Bay township as a populated area.—The letter was received.

The Public Works Department advised that the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, was considering a live-year plan for metalling of settlement roads, and requested to be supplied with a return showing the name'and length of every used and unmetalled road in the county.—The action of the clerk in forwarding the completed return was approved. The Public Works Department, advised that the annual applications for grants and subsidies under the public works fund were invited from the local bodies.—lt was resolved that the matter should be left in abeyance until next meeting.

. The district engineer, Mr. O. (i. Thornton, forwarded a copy of a Utter from the East Coast Commissioner regarding ti deviation on Delta road. — It was decided to reply that immediate steps were being taken to legalise a deviation of this road.

The Malcaraka County Council forwarder! a copy of a resolution relative to the amalgamation of local bodies.— it was decided to reply that the council already had passed a motion opposing amalgamation proposals ami had no leasoa to alter its opinion.

The Cook Hospital Board forwarded details of the levy of £I7OB to be male on the council for the coming year. A further letter set out details of the proposals to be submitted to the Local Government Loans Board for sanction to borrow £115,500.—‘-Both letters were received.

The honorary secretary of the Plunket Society asked for the use of a room in the council chambers. — While the council regretted that it could not grant the use of the council chambers, it was agreeable to provide a kerosene stove for healing the present room.

The East Const Commissioner forwarded a contribution towards the cost .of metalling Delta road.—This was received.

The Public Works Department, Wellington, forwarded a proclahiation closing the road in block N, Uawa Survey District. —The letter was received.

The Hon. P. Fraser, Acting Prime Minister, wrote urging that donations should be made to the King George V memorial fund not only from local authorities but also from private individuals.——The chairman Stated that

donations could be made either at the county office or ’at the local Post Office.

Tenders wore considered for 300yds of Napier shingle, and it was decided to secure this quantity at 31s 3d per yd-

It was resolved that no action should be taken with regard to clearing the drain through Mr. G. P. Hurrev’s property, but that the engineer should lie authorised to clear drains on Whnrckaka road.

Accounts amounting to £IOO9 were passed for payment. Engineer’s Report

Hi his report the engineer stated: —

“Secondary Highways. — Ordinary maintenance has been attended to. A commencement lias been made crushing at Mangatoitoi and the upper section will be top-dressed, and the slip at McNeil's metalled. “Ridings.—Arakihi: All the metal has been carted for metalling on the Arakihi road. The roller has now been moved on to the job in readiness to roll the sections as the breaking down on the road progresses. A surfaceman has been started up on the Kiore road. Hauiti: Wuiliau road has been top-dressed and a new culvert put. in. A small drainage job on the Mill road has been commenced and a culvert ordered. Mtuigahein: Proposals for the construction of Hicks bridge have been approved, the estimated cost; being £250. The surfaceman has recommenced on the Mnngatokerau road, where lie will carry out metal repairing and patching work urgently required. The turning place at the end of the Pnrcmnta road at Mountford *s has been extended with papa rock. A culvert has been put in on the Racecourse road near the racecourse gate. Tenders for metalling on the Delta (Bruce’s) road have been accepted and the work commences next Monday. Mangatuna: The 30 chains of metalling—bottom course only—has been completed and blinded on the Kniaua Beach road. The remainder of the Kniaua road has been graded up and grass shoulders cut oil’. Ta,uwliarepnrao: Contract 4/36, reformation on the Tauwlifirepanie road beyond the Htiumii junction has been completed and is awaiting inspection by tin l Public Works Department. The grader lias been on this section and is now clearing slips off .Spencer's road. A man has been started up on the Huanui length of the main Tauwhareparae road,
