The Mayor, Mr. I). W. Coleman, M.P., lias requested that all donations to tfoe list opened by tho Qisborno Borough Council should bo forwarded not later than Juno 3, on which day it, is proposed to close thrv list in preparation for forwarding an account of the subscriptions to the acting Prime Minister, tho Hon P. Frascr. "In accordance with a national scheme the three, most important main highways in the county—Napier-Gisbomo, PetancTaupo and Napier-Pahnorston North - became State highways in November of last year and in future will bo under the supervision of the Public Works Department," commented the, chairman of the Hawke's Bay County Council, Mr. F. ii. Logan, in "his annual report to the council, "Members of the council have frequently remarked that this should result in a measure of relief, but it is necessary to remember that the cost of these' State highways must in tho last analysis be borne by the fanner," ho added.
