SPECIAL DEFENCE LEVY
HOSTILITY IN LONDON
SCATHING STATEMENT
HANDICAP TO BUSINESS
(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 27, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 2ti. Continued weakness of most shares reveals that the City's hostility to the special tax as a defence contribution is unabated.
Sir Robert Home, the Conservative member of the House of Commons j'or Ilillhead, voiced the discontent in a scathing statement, declaring that if a malevolent spirit desired to tempt British industry back to its old sluggish ways it could scarcely have conceived a more insidious device than the defence contribution which singled out for exceptional taxation the growth of business.
