CONTRACTORS WARNED SETTLERS' MANY REQUESTS (Herald Special Reporter.) TIKITIKI, this day. A, wanting that • contractors engaged on public works, who had no transportlicense- could not compete with those who had licenses, was given by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, at Te Araroa to-day in reply to a complaint that some lorry owners employed by the department were competing against legitimate carriers.
"This pirating must cease," Mr. Semple said. "Those men will either have to quit competing or get off the job."
Later, when shown a long list of side roads the settlers wished him to inspect, Mr. Semple flatly refused to travel on any of them except for a short distance 'on the Te Hue road, where roadside refreshments were served by the settlere, explaining that he could.not lie , expected to pass judgment on a road by going over it at 40 miles an hour.
On Te Hue road the settlers explained the flood difficulties created by the big rainfall, up to loin, in a day, and Mr. A. G. Hultquist, member for the district, asked assistance for Waiapu as a poor county.
