STORTFORD LODGE SALE
SHEEP VALUES FIRM CATTLE LACK QUALITY (Per Press Association.) HASTINGS, last, night. There was rather a hotter tone about the Storti'ord Lodge market to-day. sales being unusually" erratic. Particularly was this so with fat cattle and lambs, principally due to lack of quality. There were not so many back country lines offering as the recent sales. .Many vendors from the. flats and coastal districts preferred to relinquish their stock, rather than prejudice their supplies of feed. The yarding of 230 station-bred fat cattle lines lacked quality, except- in a few pens. The values showed a trend towards easier levels. Extra prime sorts, however, sold readily, making late values. Good ox beef 'made 30s a 1001 b, and a better extra choice pen made 345, the top price. An exceptionally heavy bullock made £l3 10s. Medium-weight prime finished sorts brought £ll, while small-grown, well finished entries brought £lO 10s. Several entries of bullocks lacked finish and were very plain, (heir quality being much below butchers' requirements. Several pens of heifers were offered, but these were chiefly small-grown. Those showing good finish made 24s per 1001 b. A number of pen-; of voalcrs were offered, including some well-done soils, which made £4, after good competition, A large percentage of 1,1 IP cows offered were of plain quality. The values indicated quite satisfactory sales. The best, qualify made 21s a I.oolb, while plain soils showed an improvement on scheduled rates. The poorest quality sob! well above the boner schedule.
Weaners constituted 99 per cent of the store cattle yarding. The recovery noted lately was' held. Well-grown steers showing breeding made good values, the best price being' £5 ss. Lines where quality was evident, found buyers. The
bidding, generally, however, was surprisingly erratic. The yarding of 14.000 sheep was slightly larger than usual. The market for wethers was firm, with a definite advance, on recent, sales for breeding ewes. The top price .was 25s 7d. The'market for lambs was erratic with a good inquiry for forward, healthy, well-woolled carry-over wether lambs. Nicely grown, shorn wether lambs made 18s 9d, smallgrown, woolly sorts in light condition, making 14s. Five-year breeding ewes carrying a good slipe made 24s 3d, but the selling of these lots was slow, with little inquiry.
