TRIBUTE TO SIR J. ALLEN

UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

FIFTY YEARS OF SERVICE

(Special to the Herald.) DUNEDIN, this day.

The council of the Otago University at the monthly meeting yesterday placed on record its appreciation of the setv.icea.-given it bv .Sir .lames Allen, who has completed 50 years of membership of the council. He was the vice-chancellor from December of 1!)03 until October of 1009, and the chancellor until 1912.

The resolution stated that the work carried out by Sir James in university matters and "in the sphere of national affairs as a member of the Massey and National Governments, High Commissioner in London and a representative at Geneva would long be held in grateful remembrance by the university and the community at large. The council earnestly hoped that it might retain his valuable services for many years.

The chancellor said that Sir James was held in the highest possible regard throughout New Zealand quite apart from any party considerations. "It is very difficult for the younger members of the council to realise the extent of Sir .lames' service to the university for over 50 years," said the chancellor. lie referred to Sir James' early political life as the member of Parliament for the Bruce constituency. "Whatever he has touched he has ornamented," said the chancellor.
