KOPUAWHARA NEWS

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES HAMPERED (Herald Correspondent.) Owing to the destruction of the Y.-M.C.A. hall at No. 3 camp, social activities have been more or less disorganised. Several dances which were to be held this week have been postponed and will take place later at Opoutama. A temporary post office and canteen have been re-erected opposite the site of the old building, and the nucleus of another lending library established at Waikokopu. No. 4 camp and No. sat I'aritu have now their own recreation halls, and the bi-weekly talking pictures will be produced at the latter camp from now on. The official opening will take place on May 7. 'flu- usual Sunday evening song and praise service was held in (he school i.uilding. which was placed at the disposal of the camp padre by the school committee. A large congregation gathered round the Lev. F. Thompson, whose efforts on behalf of the residents are much appreciated.

The health of the community remains Rood, with the exception of a few minor injuries, and the sister in charge lias had slight relaxation from her arduous tasks of the past few weeks.* Several shooting parties spent the week-end on the Mahia Peninsula. Good sport offered, and venison will grace the tables of those concerned. The weather has been very cold, with frosts, heavy rain and dark, overcast sky making conditions for those who work outdoors distinctly unpleasant. Coronation Day being a public holiday, large crowds from the camps will flock to Wairou for the celebrations which will bo held there, the restrictions not being so stringent as those at Gisborne. The returned soldiers and members of the Legion of Frontiersmen will join their brethren in the procession which is to be held in the town.
