AURORA AUSTRALIS
VISIBLE FROM OTAGO
(Special to the Herald.) DTJNEDIN, this day
. The aurora australis was seen in all its beauty last night from < o'clock onward by Otngo residents. The clear frosty air enabled the lights to be clearly seen and they presented a remarkable panorama of colours. The aurora first appeared as a bright 2low in the south-eastern and southwestern sky, and the lights then commenced to sketch their banners ot colour across the heavens. Ine phenomenon was visible for some time.
OBSERVED IN GISBORNE
CLEAR VIEW AT WAIROA
The aurora was seen by Gisborne residents last night. It was a warm vred glow in the"i?quthern;,sky, and was * confused" by some* residents with the lights of the'town. , Wairba had -a good view of the -southern lights. It. was a brilliant display, stated the* Herald's Wiuroa correspondent, low down on the horizon,- t FOr a considerable time alter the 1 first displav died down, a roso- - coloured r'ow remained in the aoutn- ' ern sky. Many people believed that the lights were the reflection of a distant fire. •
