“STONE WALLS DO NOT-”
GUERNSEY ILLUSTRATION PRISONERS’ FREE NIGHTS LONDON, Feb. 12. Illustrating the truth of the philosophy that “Stono walls do not a prison make, ” it has been revealed that prisoners in Guernsey have been strolling out almost every night for two years, returning for breakfast. The disclosure followed the discovery that a prisoner was missing from his ceil late at night and that he returned at 5 a.m. lie was serving a long term and his privileges included an unlocked cell at nights because he stayed up after the warders had gone to bed, laying fires and washing dishes. lie also occasionally washed the gaol keys, of which he took an impression' and duplicated them in the prison workshops. He shared the keys with fellow prisoners, averaging four to eight in number, who spent the nights dancing, visiting their homes and joy-riding in stolen cars.
