CHILDREN IN DANGER

INCIDENT ON WEST COAST CAUGHT BY LARGE WAVE The need for caution on coastal sea beaches was again emphasised last, weekend, when an incident occurred at Chase’s Gorge, North Auckland, which might.have had tragic consequences but for the timely intervention of a number of campers who wore close by. A wave heavier than usual swept in from seaward and carried off a small boy who had been paddling close inshore with his father. The man released his bold of two other children and endeavoured to save the, boy. In the strong current, the children were tossed helplessly, and the father made frantic efforts to gather in the children, who were by this time separated. A number of onlookers rushed immediately into the surf and brought them to safety. While this occurred the life-saving team was at Bayly’s Gorge.
