ALLEGED FRAUDS
COLONEL'S CHEQUE'S USED
PLANE TRIPS AND TAXIS
LIVERPOOL, Aug. 21. A woman who appeared at Liverpool Police Court to-day was stated to have admitted that she had : Called on a lieutenant-colonel at Guernsey and pretended that she wanted to buy his house. While in the smokeroom she stole a book of cheques. With Oho of the cheques she bought a motorear; ~ Introduced herself to a man at Cardiff as the fiancee of a relative of his. Afterwards she bought frocks aiid underwear and paid with a bad cheque. The woman, Mrs. Phyllis Ward, 30, was charged with attempting to obtain goods value £524 from Messrs. George Henry Lees, Liverpool, and also obtaining by fraud credit amounting to £9 15s from David Charles Price, a Liverpool taxi driver.
"BIG DEALS"
Mr. .7. Tilley, prosecuting, said Ward professed to be a Canadian ranch owner who engaged in big deals. She stayed in hotels for a week at a. time without paying her bill, and made large purchases for which she paid with stolen cheques. She engaged Price to drive her about Liverpool for four hours. Starting at one o'clock in the morning, Price drove her to London. When they arrived there Ward left him and got into a private motor car, saying she was going to Hendon Aerodrome to arrange for a flight to Guernsey and also to Rome. Later she met him by appointment at Waybridge, where she found a Liverpool detective waiting for her. The detective was acting on information from Islo of Man police. It was alleged that Ward flew from the Isle of Man to Liverpool and left her hotel bill unpaid. . , ~ When Price asked her for Ins fare sue confessed that all the money she had was a half-penny Air. Tilley added that in a long statement to Det.-Sgt. Riley, Ward admitted offences all over the country. Ward was committed for trial.
