RUES SHAW'S £5 CHEQUE HITCHTN, Aug. 17. George Bernard Shaw,who recently celebrated his eightieth birthday, is still mailing his famous postcards —with the usual repercussions. Tho latest victim is a thrifty Scot. Sceptical as to the chances of getting Shaw to contribute funds for a new automobile, the Scotsman offered to double whatever the veteran dramatist might, contribute. Promptly Shaw came back with a cheque for £5 5s and a postcard, which'was just as promtply auctioned off for an additional £B ss. Now the. Scot, still rtrcing his rash--1 nes-s, has made good his promise and put up money needed to buy a new ear, which is used to transport Labour Party speakers to the .scattered villages and greens of" North Hertfordshire, where Shaw lives in: the pie- ' turcsquc hamlet of Ayot SI.
