DELIGHTFUL CJAKDEN PARTY (ITernld Correspondent.) The garden party which was organised for the equipment fund of the Ist Nnhaka Company Of the Girls Life Brigade was held last Saturday in the beautiful grounds surrounding Ihe residence of Mr. and Mrs. P. Steed. The Weather was delight nil and there was a good attendance of parents and interested friends. The smart appearance of the brigade members under the direction Si the 0.C.. Captain F.. M. Boss, as they went- through their programme, and dispersed afternoon tea was favourably commented upon. 'flic main feature of the afternoon was the presentation of the, membership. badges, these being pinned on by two members of the governing committee, Mrs. Norman Block and Mrs. Cordon Steel. The girls gave a short, display of hoop drill, the effect being very pleasing. The chaplin of the company. Sister May Gardiner, explained the aims of the" Girls Life Brigade, and also expressed the thanks of the committee, officers, .and girls to Mr. and -Mrs. P. .Steed for.so kindly throwing open, their lovelv grounds, the members of the Women's 'lnstitute for their wholehearted support, and to all who had made the afternoon so enjoyable. PUBLIC SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The Nuhaka Public School Committee meeting was held on Monday evening, those present being Messrs. W. Boyle, chairman, G. Goldstone, T. MeKce, (... B Steele and G. D. Tod, secretary. The headmaster, Mr. F. Hankin, reported that, tho roll now stood at 64, although the return of influenza had necessitated a, number of pupils being absent, The question of the elder children visiting Morcre hot springs to be taught swimming was discussed. The committee realised that this should bo an important part of the curriculum and went, into the matter of suitable, transport, in view of the increase in the quarterly allowance, from the Education Board. Mr. Hankin explained that he had asked the children to bring a pet lamb, in conjunction with the Calf Club display held at the end of the term. This was considered an excellent.- idea, and the hope was expressed that the children would take a keen interest in this suggestion, which would be to their advantage. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
