KAITI HILL VANDALISM
PROTECTION OF TREES ROAD IMPROVEMENT IIITU.MTNIBLXG PROPOSED Stops to stop vandalism and to protest trees from siock on Kniti Mill wore proposed at Inst, night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council by Cr. H. IT. De Costa, who also urged that road improvements should be effected. The proposals were referred to the works committee.
Cr. De Costa said that his proposals arose out of a visit he paid to Iho Haiti Mill reserve last week.
“I made it my business,” he said, “to visit the reserve on foot, and was disappointed to see that the seat at the top of the hill had been damaged, two slats being broken. It appeared to me to be an act of vandalism. .1 also noticed that the pohutukawa trees planted by councillors and school children on Arbor Day, 1 DM-}, had been eaten down by stock. These trees threo weeks ago wore growing very well, and, now present a sorry plight. It is evident that stock have strayed into the reserve, or else have boon grazed Micro. “Steps should be taken to stop this sort of thing,” he continued, “and .1 appeal t.o the council to do something in the matter. I suggest in the first place that we should have some signs erected. Yfc have had them before, but tliev have been destroyed, and we should offer a reward which will lead to the conviction of the culprits. “I desire to suggest that the council should install a cattle stop on the road at the entrance to the park in order to prevent stray stock.from entering Mio reserve, and, considering the nuinbci of visitors and local residents who make use of the top of Mie hill as a vantage point to view Gisborne and its surroundings, I suggest that steps be provided from the parking area to the top of the hill in order to give better access. “ Also owing to the popularity ol this road, it should bo hituminisCd, and I suggest that the Cook County Council be approached to share the cost. The road is in Mie took
connly. “Another matter which should receive attention is more provision tor stock awaiting shipment by steamer. At present when the cattle yards are full, stock are held in the vicinity of the Cook .Memorial, with the result that the fences and the grounds surrounding the memorial are damaged. I would recommend that the Harbour Board be approached with, a request that they provide a holding paddock for stock awaiting shipment.” On Cr. De Costa’s motion, the matters were referred to the works committee. ... ... .. ... ■ ■
