INEFFICIENT BRAKES
LORRY-OWNER CONVICTED
“There could not have been a worse case,” said Mr. J. G. L, Hewitt, S.M., in the Whangtarei Police Court, when the. Northern Transport Company, Limited, was charged with operating a lorry not equipped with efficient brakes. The county traffic inspector, Mr. F. Watters, said that he tested the brakes, which at 20 miles an hour took l3ofb. to pull the lorry up. “The lorry travels daily between Auckland and Wliangarei, having to negotiate had bends,” he said. “There were practically no brakes at all and the lorry had 6i tons load. I ask for a substantial penalty.” Mr. Ross, for defendant company, said that on such a route the severe strain occasionally caused the braking equipment to get) cut- of action, and this was one of tile occasions. Additional precautions would he taken in future. The magistrate imposed a fine of .C 6.
