OBITUARY
BAY OF PLENTY PIONEER MR. JOHN H. J. BOYNTON A useful life spent in pioneering w.ork in the Bay of Plenty, was brought to a close by the death on Saturday of Air. John Frederick Johnstone Boynton, of Wainiana. Born at Firoy Creek, Victoria, 7<> years ago, the late Mr. Boynton came to New Zealand with his parents when lie was two years of age. and resided in Dunedin for a few years, where his father died. His mother then moved north to Otalmini. where owing lo the hostile attitude of the natives, Airs. Boynton and her son were taken to the Barracks for protection. When the son was eight years of age, in IKIjS, he went to the Bay ol Plenty mid remained for a time at Maketu. where Hie natives were of a friendly disposition. Remaining there for a short period they went down the coast to Opotiki shortly after the massacre and owing to the menacing attitude of the Han bans sought cover in Unchurch where the Rev. Air. Volkncr was murdered. The station at Afaketu was under the command of Captain Angus Smith, whose children were the first: white children born in the Bay of Plenty. Air. Boynton spent his life farming in the Wainiana district.
