STRUCK DURING FLIGHT
TEN-SEATER AEROPLANE SAFE LANDING MADE LONDON, Oct. 5. "Port wheel burst; clear the aerodrome for arrival at 5.45 p.m.’’ This sensational wireless message was received at the Renfrew airport, near Glasgow, from Captain Elgey, who was flying a 10-seater passenger plane from Belfast to Glasgow, with two other employees. The piano was 4CGOft. up over the Irish Sea, flying in a dense mist, when there was a viciiont bump and an explosion. Captain Elgey said lie did not know what had happened. He just waited for the plane to fall to pieces in the sea, but when lie flew from the mist he looked out and saw that the greater part of the undercarriage and the wheel had disappeared.
Apparently the piano had been hit by an aeroplane climbing in the haze.
Captain Elgey miraculously landed his heavy piano on the remaining wheel without mishap, swinging the machine round as it touched ground. He alighted semi-conscious as the result of the ordeal. What hit the plane is still a mystery. No plane is reported missing.
