BOXING

PLUTO'S FIRST MATCH TO MEET N. MUDGWAY The selection of N. Mudgway as the first opponent for Bill Pluto, the Sydney welterweight who is to fight three matches under engagement to the Gisborne Boxing Association, has given much satisfaction to the boxing public in this district, Mudgway having earned a, great deal of credit by the manner in which he fought against Cyril Pluto, the brother of Bill Pluto, during his visit to New Zealand a few months ago. Mudgway lias been looked upon as the logical opponent for Pluto, but cßnfirmation of the matching has only just been secured. Discussing the fight with Mudgway, which' will take place on October 14, Pluto stated to-day that he had heard a lot of the New Zealander he was to meet, and he had no doubt that the fight would please the followers of the srame here. He felt extremelv well, the climate in Poverty Bay having suited him excellently, and he was confident that lie would be able to give a good account of himself.

Pluto has been putting in much time on road work, and mentioned that he had visited a number of Gisborne's outlying picnic and holiday resorts in the course of this work. His. trainer, Mr. 11. Gallagher, accompanies him on all his jaunts, which are of daily occurrence, and now that Pluto has swung into the serious stages of his preparation, his companion has had to take up cycling to stav with him.

Concerning Mudgway, the Gisborne public knows only what it has heard and read, for Mudgway has not yet appeared in Gisborne, and there will he a great deal of interest in his performance against Pluto. He is well entrenched in the good opinion of Ancklanders, for the merit of his performances against Cyril Pluto stamped him as an oncoming welter. He also has a knock-out victory over Jack McMahon to his credit, McMahon being the only New Zealand opponent who scored a victory over Cyril Pluto during (he hitter's visit to the Dominion.
