DEATH OF DR. POTAKA
VICTIM OF EYE INJURY HURT IN ANTARCTIC (Per Press Association.) NELSON, this day. Hr. Louis Hauiti Potaka, who was brought from Takaka and admitted to the. Nelson Hospital late yesterday afternoon in a. comatose condition, died a few hours later from morphine poisoning-. While on route from Takaka ho wrote a. note stat ing that lie had been suffering from a. severe eye injury contracted in the Antarctic, and had not had proper sleep since January of 1935, and that death would be a relief.
Dr. Potaka, who was 35 years of age, had been practising at Takaka for some years. Formerly lie was an assistant at "the Nelson Hospital and was the hoard’s medical officer at Murchison. He joined the Ilyrd Antarctic expedition as a medical officer in response to an appeal for relieving medical assistance.
