CHURCH CONCERT & DANCE SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION (Herald Correspondent.) Last evening a very successful function was held in the Muriwai Hall in aid of the Muriwai Anglican Church. The building is in urgent need of repair, oi possibly of rebuilding. A party of relief workers has done much to improve the appearance of ilic church grounds and also the graveyard at the beach. Mr. Kahn Te Hau, at the opening of the concert programme, mentioned these matters, stating that, the function had been organised by the ladies of the district, to whom much credit, was due. The opening item was a quartet, Messrs. Jv. Te Hau, \Y. Toroa, M. Pohat.u. and R. Matenga, whose harmony in t.he hymn, “Beloved it. is well,” wiis much appreciated. The next item, a Maori action song, Naiimai, was performed by a party of 12. The Mending of voices in Maori harmony, the rhythmic movements, and the swish ol Llie piupius entranced the audience. A novel item was the rendering of two Hawaiian numbers hv Mr. Mars. I‘uhalu, accompanied by a. bidden chorus. Poi items are always popular in Muriwai and the mixed poi dance which followed had to lie repeated. Following-another item by the four male voices in ISarnhy’s

“Sweet and Low,” and Miss Topsv Karepa’s rendering of “The Whistling Waltz,” five Maori girls gave a further action song, in which the movements and Maori words were set, to “On a Sunday Afternoon.” The concluding item comprised two hakas by a mixed party, Ruawharo and the better known Ka mate, Ka mate, the whole programme being enthusiastically received.

Mr. Kahn Te Hau and Mr. W. Toroa thanked all those who had assisted, assuring all that their help was really appreciated. The hall, which was prettily decorated with coloured streamers, was then cleared for dancing, Mr. W. Toroa acting as M.C. A feature was a poultry supper, which was deliciously prepared and thoroughly enjoyed. Those in charge of the supper arrangements were Mesdames Malm Poliatu. T. K. Morgan, Reiliana Wilson. K. Wilson, and Miss S. Wyllie, while Mrs. Kingi had charge of the door.

There were three competitions. Two iced fruit cakes were won by Miss Wyatt and Mr. Lambert Nepe, and a much sought after hamper went to Mr. J. Wyllie. The Krazy Kat orchestra supplied the music. Mrs. M. ITingston, Te Kuruka, returned to Muriwai yesterday from Wellington, whore she lias been representing the Maori residents of Muriwai in a conference on native affairs.-—Mrs. M. Faulkner, Wairakaia station, has returned to Muriwai after a lengthy stay in Hawke’s Bay.-—Mrs. J. Blumsky, who lias been in hospital as the result of a road accident, lias returned to her borne. -—Miss Wright is absent from the district owing to illness.—Mrs. R. Foote. Hastings, has been visiting her sister, Dlrs. J. DTcEwen, for a short while, and DTrs. R. Dunlop has also been visiting Dlrs. DlcEwen.
