Ideals of democracy formed the basis of an address to Wanganui Rotarians (by Mr. W. A. Veitch, former M.P. for Wanganui. Mr. Veitch said the greatest danger facing democracy at present was the gain in strength of sectional and local organisations, and their exercising of political forces to obtain monetary legislative advantages for themselves to the detriment of the rest of the people. Real democracy could be established only by the people acting unselfishly, disregarding every thought ■ and impulse for sectional gain.
A small township will soon spring up at Fordell, Wanganui, for additional carpenters and other workmen 1 have commenced to erect a building for stores and to construct flooring for tents. Administrative quarters, workshops and outbuildings will be erected soon, after the present work is finished'. About 60 married couples will be accommodated at the camp near the site of a tunnel lor the Turakina-Okoia deviation. Several Wanganui firms are taking a keen interest in the developments at Fordell, one having selected a site adjacent to the camp upon which to establish a canteen.
