SMUGGLERS CAUGHT
EVASION OF CUSTOMS SEAMEN DEALT WITH •~ (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day.
Several seamen this w,ee-k ha.v,e appeared before the Collector of .Customs, Mr. J. Mcintosh, who ha-9 power to deal summarily with eases of evasion of the payment of duty. A party of seamen appeared this morning, having been met at the landing by three customs officers when they came ashore by a launch from a ship anchored in the stream. After a search the oncers t;oolc possession of several.bottles "of #ia *&& whisky, silk stockings, cigarettes, cigars, dolls, and toys. The duty payable amounted to only a few shillings, but had the cases hecn taken to court each man would have been liable to a fine of at least £2O. They gladly signed confessions, raid tho duty, and listened to a fatherly talic by Mr. Mcintosh, who warned them that if they were caught again the case would be taken to court.
