SURPRISE PARTY'

(Herald Correspondent.)

A jolly surprise party organised by Mrs. W. R. Torrie and'Miss D. Papps was taken recently to the home of Mrs. R, C, Miller, W'aercnga-a^bika. Tho guests were shown into the drawing" and dining-rooms, which had been thrown open to form one large room. Tho evening passed all too quickly with community singing, amusing games and competitions, which kept everyone, in the best of spirits.

Supper was served by willing helpers. Afterwards Mr. M. 0. O'Donnell. on behalf of those present, thanked Mrs. Miller, sen., and her son, Mr. If. Miller, for their hospitality during the season and for laying down the golf course-, where, so many pleasant hours bad been spent, ifo then, asked! them to accept two small tokens of esteem. Tho recipients thanked their friends, and hoped they would till come again to play next season.

During the evening the Misses Woodbury (2). Opotiki, sang a duet, and musical items were contributed by Mrs. 11. Miller. The numerous competitions wero won. by Mrs. J. Brown, Miss Woodbury, Mr. H. Miller, and Mr. Robinson, some of them having been very cleverly arranged by Mrs. B. Cram, who was absent through illness. A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close at midnight by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and the. National Anthem, all having spent a pleasant time.

Mrs. Miller received her guests frocked in black crepe, relieved with' white, and her daughter, Mrs. R. Witters, wore a floral frock with a matching velvet coatee. Mrs. W. Torrie chose black silk marocain, and Miss D. l'apps floral silk. Those present were Mesdamos Miller, sen.. U. Witters. If. Miller. Robinson. MaeMillnn, L. Williams, .). Brown, W. ft. Torrie. A. The Misses Woodbury (2). Opoliki, are, spending an extended holiday with Mrs. Jl". Miller, Bushniero. Mis. M. Walsh. Af.ik.iuri, is visiting l'riends on (he Coast.
