WHITE FLAG UP

SPANISH VESSELS CRUISER AND DESTROYERS DENIAL OF SURRENDER FIGHTING AT TOLEDO DEFENDERS HOLDING OUT (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Sept. 22, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 21 The Tangier correspondent of a Lisbon newspaper reports that lie saw the Spanish Government cruiser, Jaime Primeiro, and three destroyers and two submarines anchored in Tangier Bay. The commanders met aboard the cruiser and then returned to their vessels. All hoisted the white flag, except one submarine, which tioisted a red flag and submerged. The remainder of the fleet weighed anchor slid left in the direction of (Jenin. A' Gibraltar message,- however,-says that the Spanish Government naval commander denies the story that the Jaime Primeiro and the destroyers and a submarine have gone to Ceuta to surrender. Deports from Spain slate that the right wing of the rebel force commanded by General Yagues, consisting of Moors and Legionaries, is endeavouring to drivo a wedge to separate the Government forces occupying the main road from Talavera to Madrid in the hope of marching to the relief of the rebels defending the Alcazar at Toledo, but are making little progress against the dogged resistance of the superior loyalist army. Meanwhile the Government forces yesterday launched a savage onslaught, showering the Alcazar with shells, bombs and hand grenades, but failed to dislodge the defenders. Three insurgent planes flew over the Alcazar and endeavoured to drop food, but were driven off. Pilots reported that the defenders are likely to hold out until relieved. A report from Madrid states that the Spanish Ministry has ordered all militiamen, armed or unarmed, to report to barracks immediately. CUBA BOMB OUTRAGE FOUR PERSONS KILLED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE HAVANA, Sept. 29. Four persons were killed and 27 injured when a bomb, concealed in a small truck, shattered the building of the newspaper El Pais and a church on the opposite side of the street, causing damage amounting to £40,000. A second explosion was averted as the police found .150 sticks of dynamite in a car outside the newspaper Dairio de la Marino.

One theory is that the terrorists were angered by the newspapers’ sympathies with Die Spanish rebels. Another is that the anti-Gomez element was responsible for the outrage.
